Initial Design

Good planning does not begin with an abstract and arbitrary scheme that it seeks to impose on a community; it begins with a knowledge of existing conditions and opportunities.
- Lewis Mumford

We believe that gathering all of the site information and determining constraints at the outset is a critical first step and crucial in the success of a project. Through ongoing collaboration, our team works closely with our clients to analyze all opportunities which then inform the initial design concepts. Moving through the design process, we develop floor plans and elevations with a focus on a renowned design process that merges innovative design with practical, client-focused solutions.

Detailed Design

Technical drawings and specifications are completed and coordinated with the consultant team. Prior to being issued to clients, construction documents are carefully reviewed through an internal quality control process. Building permits and drawings are then issued for construction.

This phase involves a continuous commitment to the project management, timelines, and follow through. Our team remains active throughout this entire phase with ongoing construction administration and field reviews to assist in ensuring that construction complies with the original intent of the design, errors are avoided on site, and projects are completed to highest quality design standards and building codes.

Project Completion and beyond

At Keystone Architecture, we believe in creating solutions-driven developments of lasting value. Seeing the culmination of our client’s projects through to completion is important to us. Witnessing those same projects standing strong many years later is a testament to who we are. Our greatest compliment is having clients return to us for future projects. View all projects

Matt is a skilled and knowledgeable #Calgary team member who has quickly advanced from #technologist to project coordinator. For over 10 years, he has gained valuable work experience in a variety of typologies, including low to high-rise buildings, assisted living facilities, and hotels.

Matt is committed to maintaining his #technicalskills and staying up to date on innovative, industry trends and #digitaladvancements. We are delighted to have as we take on new and exciting Calgary projects!
It is imperative to stay current on technological advancements, which is why we design with Building Information Modelling (BIM), a trend that’s driving digital transformation in our industry.

This revolutionary technology helps to save stakeholders from costly material, labour, and schedule overruns. When less time is spent resolving unexpected on-site issues, a higher quality and faster build is likely to result.

BIM is the holistic process of managing information for a construction project. It is a cloud-based platform where architects, engineers, and trades create 3D models of their scope of work. These models are then combined to enable 3D visual inspection and identify design challenges, which are tracked and resolved in the model long before construction starts.

Contact us today to learn how your next project can benefit from #BIM.
Excited to announce that Rob Hughes has joined our management team as an Associate! Rob will also be taking on the new role of Digital/Building Information Modeling (BIM) Practice Lead, to ensure the ongoing advancement of company-wide #BIM project presence, development, and culture. As such, he will establish the firm’s #digital delivery strategy and oversee our #technology services, production efficiency, training, #IT, and quality control.

Introducing Caitlin Tudor, one of the newest team members in our #Calgary office. Caitlin oversees all marketing initiatives from social media and website updates to overall strategy and analytics. She also plays a critical role as the welcoming, first point of contact for new clients, who then connects them to our team, and creates custom proposals using graphic design software. She holds a Bachelor of Communications from the @ucalgary and has gained experience in a variety of sectors, including engineering, environmental, oil and gas, and post-secondary. We are thrilled to have her creative and process-driven skills on our team and have already seen an immense improvement in how our marketing collateral reflects our brand.

Outside of work, you can find her exploring new hiking trails with her German Shephard, attending concerts and comedy shows, or redecorating yet another space in her home.

With warm wishes, we announce the retirement of our Founding Principal, Ron Martens. For over 35 years, Ron has perfected his design/planning and client management skills to become one of the most well-respected business professionals in BC’s Fraser Valley.
Ron was the driving force to establishing Keystone Architecture (along with Norm Davis, Architect AIBC) 32 years ago and propelling us to our present industry position. He helped us achieve success through the development of worship facilities and recreational camps, which quickly emerged into unique ventures including multi-residential and retirement communities, industrial projects and more.
Many of our accomplishments would not have been possible without his hard work, dedication, and commitment to developing relationships within the community and projects that surpass our clients’ expectations.
Although we will miss the positive impact he had on our team, we wish him happiness and a more leisurely pace of life spending time with family, friends and his cars!
After 14 years of dedicated service, Sharon Gerbrandt, our Office Administrator, is setting her sights on a well-deserved retirement. Sharon is one of our most long-standing employees whose kindness, can-do attitude and creative mindset will be sorely missed.
Sharon joined Keystone Architecture in its early days as a small firm in Abbotsford. She has seen our firm grow immensely and been an integral part in managing our evolving office management needs, and seamlessly onboarding new employees. Her shining personality welcomes clients at the door, makes our team feel at home, and played a vital role in maintaining our collaborative and fun team atmosphere.
All of us here at Keystone will greatly miss Sharon, but we wish her and her family the best of luck in the future, and all the happiness a cross-country RV trip can bring!
