The Award-Winning Coulter Berry Building in Fort Langley
The Coulter Berry building is a LEED Gold landmark building in the heart of the Fort Langley village that was completed by Keystone Architecture in Fall 2016. The building was designed for mixed-use applications and includes retail shopping spaces, commercial offices and restaurants. The award-winning building merges contemporary elements with a heritage style design that enhances the surrounding neighborhood.
Heritage
Designing the mixed-use Coulter Berry building for historic Fort Langley was not without its challenges. It was important for the design to encompass urban elements while also paying tribute to Fort Langley’s treasured heritage. Keystone Architecture was tasked with revitalizing Fort Langley village’s historic atmosphere and economy with the project. Steel and concrete construction systems were used alongside high-end exterior and interior finishes to give the building a timeless, authentic appearance.
Sustainability
As an architectural design firm committed to innovative design and practical solutions, it was important for Keystone Architecture to design the Coulter Berry building in Fort Langley with both sustainability and energy efficiency in mind. The building makes use of 26 rooftop solar panels to help balance its electricity consumption. To reduce its carbon footprint, 100% of the building’s heating comes from geothermal wells built beneath the ground. In order to achieve LEED Gold certification from the Canada Green Building Council, the building also functions to reduce water consumption and support bicycle transportation.
Award-winning
In 2016, the Coulter Berry Building won the mixed-use category award at the sixth annual Fraser Valley Commercial Building Awards. The building’s heritage style and contemporary design elements create a unique, vibrant experience for visitors. The Coulter Berry Building is a landmark hub in the heart of the Fort Langley village, providing much-needed retail, restaurant and commercial space to the community.
